Weekend Get-Away

Tak and I have been putting in a lot of hard days at our perspective jobs, so we figured a quick weekend get-away to one of our favorite cities was in order. On Friday night, we took the 8:30 pm flight out to San Francisco on Virgin America airlines. We arrived at our diggs for Friday night, the Bay Bridge Inn. This hotel is definitely not the Four Seasons, but the location was walking-distance to plenty of attractions in East SF (not to mention, we scored a very cheap deal). The owner / inn-keeper was a very friendly and gracious fellow, asking us questions and thanking us for staying at his humble establishment. We settled in and freshened up. Even though it was almost midnight we were not relaxed enough to drift to sleep, so we took a stroll down Harrison to grab a donut and coffee. There are few things as relaxing as drinking coffee and eating a donut while browsing a newspaper.

Saturday morning we slept in a couple of hours, which was heaven for me, I'll admit. We got a late check-out pass from the Inn owner so we took our time and grabbed coffee and breakfast at JT's Cafe on Harrison Street. This place is about a year old and everything has that "new look" feel to it. The manager was another really friendly and chatty fellow that gabbed it up with us while we waited for our lattes and breakfast bagels. I ordered the swiss cheese and egg bagel sandwich and fresh fruit. They were tasty and provided the energy in carbs to burn for all the walking we would be doing during the day. Our lattes were very good.

Later that afternoon, we grabbed a taxi to our next hotel, the Hilton in the Financial District. We picked this hotel because of its location: it bordered Chinatown and was a short bus ride to all parts of the city. This place has a modern feel and super comfy bed. This was no Bay Bridge Inn! We lounged around watching TV in our room for a bit. The hunger pangs kicked in so we walked a couple of blocks through Chinatown. We came across an original Banksy in Chinatown, and then spotted an appealing tiny Thai restaurant. We indulged in Spring Rolls, Coconut Soup and Massaman Curry. Mmm, it really hit the spot! All the dishes had a great taste. We did a bit more window-shopping through Chinatown and made our way back to hotel.

Hilarious Poster we saw up in the Thai Restaurant: "Stalking is justifiable and natural"

We met up with Tak's buddy later Saturday night at the Ferry Building Marketplace. We underestimated the long wait for a taxi so we arrived 10 minutes late at the Wine Bar to find him sitting at a table with cold drinks ready for us. Jason is a riot and had us laughing all night. We joked around and engaged in conversation for about an hour until they closed, then walked over to the Pier 23 Cafe for some live jazz and more beer. We sat at a table in the back patio overlooking the bay and conversed and laughed some more until we realized Jason had only a few minutes to catch the last train out of the city.

We chugged our beers as the jazz band played a great rendition of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit". We were jolly with beer-filled tummies as we clapped when the song ended and made a speedy exit to grab the last train. It was quite the adventure power-walking our way down Embarcadero with a grand beer buzz to the train station. Jason made the train with 4 minutes to spare and we said our goodbyes through the ticketing gates. Tak & I figured the hotel was less than a mile away so we walked the 10 or 12 blocks to the Hilton and passed out cold from the day's activity.

Sunday arrives . It is our last day in San Francisco and Tak lets me sleep in again. We take a taxi to Fisherman's Wharf and we indulge in Fish and Chips and beer at Wipeout Bar and Grill on Pier 39. I have to be honest and say that Wipeout's version of Fish n Chips was not as tasty as Yorkshire Fish n Chips in Denver, CO. I will say that the service was good and it's a nice looking and clean establishment. We proceeded to check out the sea lions at the very end of Pier 39. I love how they just lay on each other and aren't afraid to vocally (and loudly) showcase their displeasure with another sea lion if it imposes on its sleeping space. It cracks me up. Or maybe they are just appealing to my lazy nature. Whatever the case, the sea lions OWN Pier 39.

It's almost check-out time at the hotel so we grab a bus back to Market and walk a couple of blocks to arrive at the Hilton. The hotel is cool with us storing our bags for the afternoon. The staff at the Hilton were really nice and accommodating, I have to say. I would definitely consider staying there again. We grab a bus to Haight-Ashbury and hung out there for the remainder of our stay.

We strolled around the neighborhood and did a little shopping at Amoeba Records and a book/art store. I came across Reid Speed's house/fidget mix in the Dubstep section, which was awesome, and Tak picked up a vinyl of a Dubstep remix by The Specials. Tak surprised me with the flip books by Dita Von Teese, "StripTeese". It was ooo la la, tres sexy!

Very sexy book by Dita Von Teese

We barely made a dent in Golden Gate Park and walked around the Children's area and past 'hippy hill". We definitely came across plenty of colorful characters. I loved it and was sad that we couldn't see more of the park due to time constraints. We made a stop at Asqkew Grill for some "healthy fast food". I really enjoyed the Portabello Vegeterian skewer on a bed of Citrus Cous Cous. The grilled veggies were crisp but the char was just right. Tak enjoyed his beef burger and boldly declared it was one of the best burgers he'd ever tasted. We made one last stop at Buena Vista Park where we strolled and enjoyed the views of the city below. We trekked it to the bus stop and made the sleepy trip back to the hotel in the Financial District to grab our bags and ride to the airport.

Sadly, our San Francisco get-away was coming to an end but we enjoyed every aspect of our trip and spent a fair amount of it eating. We had good times over drinks, did plenty of walking all over town and most importantly, spent some valuable time recouping from the grind of every-day life. Hopefully we'll find ourselves in San Francisco again soon...

See you in L.A.

Wee man's Chronic tacos

Well...on a whim, we decided to check out Wee Man's Chronic Taco's down in Redondo Beach. If you don't know who Wee Man is...just take a look into the early 2000's..MTV's Jackass (as well as plenty of other underground skate videos, concerts, sideshows...ask the googles if you don't know who Wee Man is), one of my favorite unlockable skaters on Tony Hawk Skater games.
I'll post up some pics of the food and atmosphere..it was a fun trip all in all. Rock music, about 6 tv's going with all things sports/comedy. they even had Married with Children running, which happens to be one of my faves.

Mari had the Cheese Quesadilla, which she enjoyed. Huge, cooked to a slight crisp with gooey cheese in the middle..to be honest..I wish I went with that. She also scored a cookie.

I had the carne asada burrito. Huge in portion, refried beans, black beans, steak, salsa, lettuce, cheese. I wish i would have put some sour cream perhaps, which I felt it was lacking. But anyhow..it's good grub. If ya drink there is beer available, and plenty of visual stimulation.

And plenty of pictures of Wee Man plastered all over the place.

I have to say I agree w/ a yelp review... "this is the perfect example of Meh Food"..it wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. The whole thing ran me 12 bucks, and I'd prolly opt for chipolte or Pachanga, but this isn't to say it's not worth another visit if I was in the area, or with someone who wanted to go. Good times going down in Redondo..

oh...there was friendly staff..a little slow and "jaded", but I guess it add's to the character of the place. It was worth it to hear this woman who had to be about 45-50 saying she loved the jackass show.

In researching a little for this blog post..I found some video game footage of the taco entrepreneur himself

Definite props to Mr Wee Man for putting his popularity somewhere constructive..lol. He's serving up cows and chickens while Steve-o from jackass is on the Peta trip...lol

Truxton's American Bistro

Finding ourselves on Manchester and Sepulveda on a Saturday morning, Tak and I were hungry and yearning for a "decent" breakfast or brunch establishment. Consulting our frequently-utilized Yelp iPhone applications, Tak located a highly-rated place by the name of "Truxton's American Bistro". Turns out, Truxton's was literally walking distance from the Pep Boys shop we had just visited. We easily found street parking and were promptly seated by the friendly hostess.

I immediately noticed the friendly staff and attentive service. The modern and simple decor lends to an open and casual air with a high-ceiling resembling a wood barn house. Tak and I also noticed that the majority of their clientele included many "ladies lunching". Mothers were having brunch with their daughters and large groups of women were seen enjoying their Mimosas or Bloody Mary's.

Truxton's provides a large drinks menu with a full bar. The "Margatini" sounded interesting and I would love to try their special for $3 Mimosas or Bloody Mary's with brunch on a future visit. I also had their house coffee and it was great! Now I know what the term "full-bodied" coffee means. Tak's iced tea was also really tasty. If you're feeling celebratory, order their $15 bottle of champagne.

The new menu includes some great seasonal items. I ordered the "Breakfast Pizza". Tak ordered the "Taco Salad". See below for pics. I was pleased with the Breakfast Pizza as I'm a big fan of mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes. Tak enjoyed the Taco Salad, although he would have preferred that the beef be cooked well-done and not so rare.

Truxton's American Bistro was a nice surprise and I highly recommend Truxton's for a breakfast or brunch event. Their prices are moderate and their service is excellent.

Flying Pig Truck

Good afternoon/morning/evening readers..

we hope you are well and thank you for continuing to read our blog here...we love doing it, but if you take a look at our time stamps..we lag...so we'll try to get more on it :-)

But onto the food...

On a (what seems like frequent) trip to volcano tea in Santa Monica/Sawtelle area for some shaved ice..I see the good ole Kogi BBQ truck with a normal line of people waiting for it to setup. But over to the right of it was a bright pink truck "THE FLYING PIG" http://flyingpigtruck.com/.

So my faithful puppy and I stopped by their truck and for fun (we had just ate), looking over their menu everything looked awesome!!!

I got a chicken taco, enticed by the sound of peanut sauce and nothing too spicy..

MAN.....that was a FREAKIN AWESOME TACO..

(my iphone pic)

not spicy at all, a nice blend of grilled chicked (tasted fresh), peanuts, greens/fruits and a light sauce.

ran me under 3 bucks... A++

...I'll need to go back when I have a full stomach..but it will be soon..so more to report later...I'm looking forward to either the peanut butter carnitas or a crunchy tofu!

But definitely follow them on twitter

KFC's Double Down

Tak here-

Yeah...I just had to try it...after all the headlines

2 chicken breasts around cheese and bacon?...YES PLEASE...While I don't recommend them on a regular basis...this was definitely fun to try :-)

Sandos Sub Shop

Mari and I decided to let Yelp do the talking for us and we found a great little sub shop in Manhattan Beach called "Sandos". While parking is limited to street, we made it there, and discovered a very hard working shop. Upon entry you see it's room for about 6 people standing shoulder to shoulder, or 2-3 customers comfortable. They definitely focus on the delivery crowd..lol

But onto the food...

Mari went with the Garden Burger, simple, but with all the fixin's. She gave it a 7 out of 10.

Tak went with the "Abe Froman"...which hopefully you remember from Ferris Buellers Day Off was the "Sausage King of Chicago". Ironically..tak has JUST watched that movie (courtesy of netflix) that very morning

The "Abe Froman" is a hot Italian sausage sandwich with cheese and onions. It had lettuce, grilled onions and spicy mustard...was delish! Tak gave his an 8.5 out of 10!

This place is definitely worth hitting up if you're in the neighborhood!! The staff was friendly and they review well on Yelp!

Jerry's Deli in Miami Beach, FL

This year for Winter Music Conference, Mari and I (along with my lovely sister Marcia) headed down to sunny Miami Beach, FL. Was of course a lovely time, with lots and lots of great food!

One stop which we felt to share with you was Jerry's Deli right in the heart of the strip on Collins.

This place is called "world famous Jerry's Deli" for a reason, a MASSIVE menu followed up by lots and lots of yummy food. Was zero wait to get seated (luckily), but the one complaint we had was, it literally took 15 min to get a waiter to our table to pay. This was well after we were done eating and ready to go. We were seriously on the verge of walking out.

Mari Enjoyed a Fruit and Yogurt Parfait. Strawberry, Granola & Yogurt served chilled and tall.

Tak Enjoyed a Ruben Sandwich with a side of massive onion rings

Marcia Got a lovely little salad, I forgot the ingredients but take a look..it looks awesome!

Kogi BBQ...the myth, the legend..the experience!

picture-5
If you live in LA, and not under a rock...you have heard of the "Nuevo Food Truck" Movement. At the forefront of this mobile-culinary takeover, is Kogi BBQ. The only food truck I've ever waited nearly an hour for food.

I first heard about Kogi by word of mouth ("have you heard about the Kogi Truck?"), followed up with this video...
Needless to say I was intrigued....what is this Kogi stuff all about???

Well...to put it bluntly...THIS...
one of the best damn taco's I've had in a while.
Kogi Taco by Comforting_Lie.

The Kogi BBQ phenomenon started with a little truck, that served Korean-BBQ tacos..It was a typical foot truck, but little did they know they were on the verge of a food revolution.

To spare you the history lesson, I'll link you here to a writeup in the LA times

ONTO THE FOOD THE EXPERIENCE!

To be fair...we tried to hit up the Kogi truck unsuccessfully TWICE!...

First time...
we show up about 20 min after the "tweeted" time to be there, only to find a line of at LEAST 40 people...We weren't down...

Second Time....
We show up to the area it's supposed to be in..and simply..couldn't find it!! Perhaps it wasn't there yet..or we were blind

Third time..proved to be a charm for us

Mari and I got the word on kogi's Twitter that they were showing up to the "Brig" in Venice around 10pm..so we show up @ 9:45..to find 5-10 people already there waiting. Over the next 20 min (and a follow up twit that they were running late) we formed into 20-30 people waiting for the Kogi Truck to roll. up..and when it did...it was a spectacle.

Luckily, where I was standing.. apparently the line formed behind me!
Being the generous person I am, I let the people who were indeed there before us go ahead of me, which they were very polite and thankful for. (you can see Mari and Belle holding our place as I snapped the picture)

It took them about 15-20 min to setup and block off the area needed to serve the hungry masses (they setup in the parking lot of a popular bar in Venice..making it quite a spectacle)

Then...on come the orders!

For our first time, we went with some recommended nibbles-

Mari started off with the Kimchee Quesadillas... excellent mixture of Kimchee and Cheese all with a very tasty sauce...highly recommended!
Kimchi Quesadilla from Kogi by Comforting_Lie.

I tried the Kogi Burrito
while the photo isn't the most artistic angle of the food...it was heavenly!!!!

and as I showed you at the beginning of this blog-

I don't know how else to describe this other then..a taste explosion..all the elements are there for the perfect amount of taste sensation..(cheesy sounding???..go try one!!..I dare you to come up with something better!)
Kogi Taco by Comforting_Lie.

And that concluded our Kogi Adventure...
the entire time passed...1 hour 10 minutes
Money spent..$14
People still behind us when we left were about 30-40 people deep....so I didn't feel too bad!
-------------------------------------------------

PROS: Seriously some of the best Truck Food and Taco's we've EVER had, A few of the trucks accept Credit Cards!
CONS: Sometimes the wait is murder (1 hour +), Some of the Trucks don't accept Credit Cards

---------------------------------------------------

We've revisited the Kogi Adventure a few times since, never to be let down. They have a brick and mortar location housed inside the bar "Alibi Room", which serves Kogi in a bar setting, with not as much of a line or "hunt" for the truck.

Canters Deli- Los Angeles, CA

One evening at about quarter to 1am

We're out on the town, and decided it's time to eat.

Being on the west side, one word came to my mind..CANTERS!. Any Los Angeles local knows about this hidden gem open 24 hours. Aside from being a former hangout of Guns and Roses, this place is the ULTIMATE deli. Gigantic servings, beautiful classic design/decor and most importantly..excellent food. Driving up to the restaurant, you're bombarded with billboards and signs directing you to this little spot on North Fairfax Avenue. Then you pull up, and there it is, in all it's glory..CANTERS "a Los Angeles landmark for over 50 years."

Canter's

Upon walking in, you're greeted with a fully functioning Deli, with huge cuts of meat and cheese, tantalizing the taste buds already. The dining room is a classic decor with plenty of seating.

the walls are lined with memorabelia from all over, Baseball, rock and roll and alot of pictures from the old days of Canters history.

But I'd have to say the biggest visual treat in the restaurant is the amazing ceiling piece, it's breathtaking

DSC09554 by Comforting_Lie.

However..onto the food....

You're started off with some of the most delicious pickles ever, crisp with one heck of a little bite!

DSC09555 by Comforting_Lie.

By suggestion of the waiter, we got the Matza Ball soup...EXCELLENT. The matza was firm and tasty and the broth was simple and equally tasty.

DSC09559 by Comforting_Lie.

Tonight Mari had an omelette  with the potato pancakes (latkas I believe) with a side of Applesauce and Sour Cream, and she raved about it. As you can see from the picture below, the portion was generous and the omelette  was scrumptious.

DSC09563 by Comforting_Lie.

Our good buddy paul was in town and he has the classic Corned Beef and Cabbage, which forfils the legend...it was AWESOME (and huge). A 1/2 of head of cabbage cooked just right, a huge pile of Corned beef cut into strips and potatoes and carrots on the side. He took home about 1/2 of it..but it made some awesome lunch the next day.

DSC09565 by Comforting_Lie.

As for me, I had the Rueben Sandwich...I couldn't resist! It was huge, fresh and just the right amount of thousand island and cabbage. Pretty messy, perhaps a tab thicker rye bread could be used to tame that monster of a sandwich..but it was worth it. All with a side of fat cut french fries.

DSC09564 by Comforting_Lie.

All in all the meal was awesome. It's a tad pricey, but worth every penny, especially being nearly 1am and you brought your hunger. Make sure and check out the Menu from the 60's posted up in the front, where our same meal would of run 15 bucks total (as opposed to $50ish for 3 people).

We finally had someone else at the table with us this time, so we can post a pic of us, pre-meal!
